Diabetic Foot Care
Podiatrists/Chiropodists have an essential role in diabetic foot health by assessing, preventing, treating and educating patients with diabetes. The HSE and the World Health Organisation recommend that all diabetics have an annual foot health check-up.
Diabetes can have serious long term effects on the feet and legs. Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) is a common complication seen in the lower limb. Neuropathy can cause numbness, tingling, or pain. Nerve damage can lowers the ability to feel pain, heat, or cold. Pain is the bodys alarm system. If you don’t feel pain in your feet, you may not notice a cut, blister, or other injurys. Small problems can become serious if not treated quickly. Poor circulation (peripheral Vascular Disease) can lead to poor healing, ulceration and in severe cases amputation.
We carry out annual diabetic foot health assessments. This involves a series of neurological (nerves/senses) and vascular (blood flow) assessments that gives information about your overall foot health. The results will also be sent to your G.P. We will discuss the implications and complications of diabetes and your foot health in order to give you a better understanding of what your condition.
BioMechanical Assessments
If you are suffering from foot pain when you are standing, walking, exercising, it could be related to the biomechanical function of the foot. An examination can be carried out by your podiatrist. This involves a number of tests to assess strength, balance, flexibility, range of motion and quality of motion. They will also look at unusual wear-patterns on your shoes and areas of high pressure on the foot.
